Dear Sirs, Our production enterprise “Metallurgical deoxidizers plant” would like to offer metallurgical grade (2-25 mm) of calcium carbide (CaC2) as steel primary deoxidizer aiming at substitution of expensive aluminum in order to get savings. The basis for our proposal for mutually beneficial cooperation is successful application of CaC2 at most of Russian steelmaking companies and abroad (ArcelorMittal and METINVEST, Ukraine, COS TARGOVISTE, Romania) which in turn is based on the following technical and economic conclusions: 1) Steel oxidation level in ladle after tapping is reduced in the same degree as when using aluminum; 2) Consumption rate of other deoxidizers (such as Al, FeSi, FeSiMn and FeMn) used in conjunction with CaC2 is significantly reduced; 3) Content of FeO in slag is also reduced and basicity of slag rises; 4) Tendency to formation of alumina nonmetallic hardly-deformed inclusions in steel decreases; 5) Due to the fact of sufficient primary deoxidation of steel at tapping the recovery of alloying elements at liquid Fe rises so reduction of ferroalloys consumption rate takes place correspondingly and comes to 5-15%. Consumption of calcium-containing wire is reduced up to 20%. 6) Al-substitution-rate by CaC2 varies from 1 to 1.14 depending on indexes of smelting and tapping process; 7) Average cost of steel deoxidation is lower by up to 40% compared to Al while deoxidizing ability of calcium carbide is not inferior to Al; 8) Former problem of manual addition of CaC2 at tapping is solved at almost all steelworks in Russia and abroad; 9) Calcium carbide does not pose any threat to personnel safety. Air sampling by the Laboratory of Industrial Hygiene on the working area of Converter No.3 at oxygen-converter shop of JSC "Arcelor Mittal Temirtau" (Republic of Kazakhstan) when applying calcium carbide as deoxidizer showed that all measurements were lower than established international norms. 10) “Metallurgical deoxidizers plant” supplies calcium carbide packed into safety hermetic steel drums of 10, 15, 20 and more liters volume which provides for high accuracy at batching the material by weight. We can offer CaC2 with gas-generating capacity up to 290 l/kg.
